Soapbox: Witch Hunt on the Web - A Pagan's Personal Journey to the Cyber-Stake
Posted on Apr 18, 2004 - 01:30 PM by Tagni

General Interest Having been a member of the Pagan Community for nearly two decades has taught me how to “fly beneath the radar” when needed. However, never had I dreamed it possible, that a business would discriminate against me strictly because their quasi-Judeo Christian beliefs estimate pagans to be hooded figures who dance around a fire chanting and preparing sacrifices. Even more outlandish, is the fact that this “profiling” occurred on the Internet, a veritable Dodge City of everything that the FBI controls like “bestiality” and “water-sports” to things they should control, but don’t - like child pornography.

The situation in question happened in the most subtle fashion; a magickal irony, itself. A company that I represent had been given a verbal go-ahead to display their product on a mid-sized Internet marketing site. In a previous conversation with the advertising executive, all points had been covered. We cordially discussed the fact that the product was made by Pagans for the Pagan community and that labeling on the bottle (specifically, the Pentagram) would be used. To this, there was not an objection. In an effort to head-off any other unseen objections, I made sure that the site was not of any religious leaning. I was reassured that it wasn’t and that to the contrary: “my product would be perfect being that the customer base was interested in alternative products). Further fueling my optimism, was the fact that we went so far as to joke about many of the pre-conceived media driven myths mis-associating Wicca and Paganism with wart covered witches on broomsticks, devil worshipping and cults that kidnap babies. With all of this, you might be wondering how the product is selling. Well, it’s not. Because it never made it to the site. And, I am quite sure that any member of a minority in this country would, unfortunately, easily relate to the polite and logical reasons of denial. Notwithstanding, as it is with people when they levy out prejudice, the explanation only magnifies the bigotry. Especially, when an idea and belief system is accepted, but the anticipated visual reaction to a symbol is not. Mr. Joseph Campbell (with all due-respect) would be rolling over in his grave. And you’ll be climbing the casket walls, too, when you read the follow up to this story…
