PhoenixPhyre 2007: PhoenixPhyre 2007 a review and a thank you.
posted by Wade on Apr 22, 2007 - 11:00 AM

Gatherings First and foremost, thank you to all the Phamily that attended the event. The phamily was amazingly drama free! (which, from a staffing point of view is wonderful in itself.)

The negative was the weather. Cold temps on Friday night and on Saturday night made the event a little more uncomfortable than we would have wished. There was a positive from this though. It was wonderful to see Phamily pull together, some did not anticipate the weather, or had issues on the road to the event that meant they didn't have the means to deal with the cold the way they would have normally. Phamily pulled together, dug out extra stuff, and supported each other as a community, it was wonderful! As a reminder, we do drag that BFT (Big @*^%$& Trailer) around for a reason - Staff has extra gear, pillows, sleeping bags, heaters, etceteras available for those emergencies, when needed, just ask anyone on staff, we can do it, or get you to someone who can.

I'd like to again, thank the merchants, auctioneers, and Phamily who purchased, donated, and Called the impromptu auction on Saturday. Those same extras, tents, supplies, radios, and other gear, are becoming very dated. The replacement of those needed items was becoming a real problem, and the monies generated will do a very good job of fixing all that... Again Thank YOU!

I've had a few after festival complaints (Two, actually) about the dropping of tribal council, but, far more people have told me they are happy that we don't do it anymore. This was event number three without a council, and I've had, to date, 6 people say they wish it was back, and over 40 who are glad we don't do it. (And I only counted Unkle Mark the once!) So, until we hear from you that we need to start it back, it's stays off the schedule. I personally like the sunday morning brunch and Social much better anyway, it gives me a chance to bounce around an talk to at least a few more of the people I've missed chatting with during the event... I don't know about everyone else, but that is one of the things I like about festival.

The phamily that came together for main ritual did a superb job. the phamily crafted main ritual continues to be a highlight of our events, it's community building, it's coopritive, and it has created some very, very good rituals.

I want to take the opportunity to say thank you to the Sage and Crone circles. Both are beginning to move forward as entities of guidance and wisdom within our community. The coming of age rituals (Held each Spring, remember this, folks!!!!!) and the Sage / Crone rites (Held each fall) honoring the transitions of life that each of us go through have had a powerful impact for those making those transitions. Being available when Phamily needs experience and wisdom is proving more and more valuable as time goes on. Not just problem resolution, although some of you do that, but guidance as well... answering questions like "I want to go into business for myself, but what is the impact on my family going to be" or "Is there something I can do to help the babys teething pain?" or "Can you help me throw darts better?" <smile> Wisdom is wisdom and you are all full of it!

To our Featured Musicians, Emerald Rose... wonderful performances, wonderful interaction with the Phamily, you guys just Rock. Playing Bocca (sp?) in merchants row, general help and interaction with community - I don't know what to say but Wow! One anectdote to share. During the Friday night concert, a Phamily member came to me as I was wandering merchants row and said "They sound great, just like they were using a PA system.... How do they do that?" to which I had to reply, "Well, they are good musicians, but remember they are PAGAN musicians...." it was good for more than one smile that weekend....

Freedom, thank you again. the Saturday Dinner concert was wonderful, you put it all together very quickly and the results was fabulous!

Nybor and Elspeth, wonderful again. You been with this phamily for many years, and taught on many subjects. I could and do make a case for you two directly sculpting the methods and the paths this Phamily has taken. And thank you again for the gift of the portfolio.

Ivo, Jim and Jo. Ivo, you are always a delight, a fountain of knowledge, a good friend, and a lot more. Thank you for bringing a part of your Family to meet Phamily. We expected that they were going to be cool, how could they not? but they exceeded all expectations. Jim and Joe: Thank you, please come back!

To the staff!

Guardians: Dawn - You did a fine job as Coordinator, I'm very pleased that Phamily has a trained backup coordinator should Rowan be unable to attend an event again.

Rowan, John, Lena, Tim, Julia, and Kristin. Your work during the event was very good, I and the Phamily, thank you for your service.

Dr. Tom - thank you for your work at the first aid tent. It was refreshing how little you were needed - And I, for one, am happy to keep it that way! It's absolutely okay for you to have nothing to do... (I know you didn't quite make it, but we can strive for that, right?)

Site Management: Walker - good job Dude! The fire keepers, Thom, Nathan, Adrienne, and Barb did an exemplary job, I'd like to point out that Thom went above and beyond, he made at least two trips to Hidden River over the winter to drop off wood. We had plenty on hand, it was his fault!

The Drum Circle was mellow, was frenetic, was soft and was hard. Nighthawk did an excellent job of managing all of that.

Brian was right there every time something broke (and found time to play the pipes at Bardic too! How cool is that?)

Jeanie - Fantastic first event as Youth coordinator - you did Great!!! That whole "more volunteers than kids" thing is fine - please continue to implement that! Warning though, I've heard a number of Phamily mention that they left their kids at home, because they didn't know what their lil ones would do at a pagan event - now they know - and the Family is coming to be with Phamily!!! heh.....

to the kitchen staff - Morgan, Zephyr, Joanie, and our newest victim (uh.. Volunteer) Tree! THANK YOU! the food was great, almost always on time, and you were always pleasant and smiling.... One minor bit of criticism for the Chef: No, do not show someone where you camp and tell them to wake you if they miss a meal - the kitchen is closed at 3:00 am, dude... <smile>

To Our site managers: Todd, Jen, Cody, Jeff and Linda everyone of you did very very well, set up and break down went just about as smooth as I have ever seen it happen (with one exception, which I will comment on shortly). todd, in particular, I want to make a point of saying thank you, you brought your new family with you to meet your Phamily, and we all know how much of a handful two young boys in a new situation can be. You juggled a lot of eggs, and, although a few of them may have cracked a little, I don't think you could have done any better of a job than you did. Linda, Walker believes in a "jump in with both feet" sort of training experience - so he dumped a bunch on ya, and you handled it with flying colors. I do want to point out that when you were told that most problems can be fixed by "using your head" he didn't mean taking down a pavilion... I'm very glad you are okay, but remember the new montra "Duck!"

Lisa - the staff Booth, setup, breakdown, gopher, pretty much anything needed. The label "Shop Rat" is an inside joke that has a meaning of respect, and appreciation, as you well know. It's unfortunate that there were people who thought it was derogatory, it isn't and wasn't - you are the best Shop Rat there is!

And to our Registration staff:

Kate, you did great, you handled things smoothly while Dianne was off site, off radio, or just a little off <smile> Thank you so much for being there. Dianne.... what else can I say about you my love? You do a damn fine job of everything you touch. I appreciate you more than you can ever know.

And Finally:

Vendors, Presenters, Staff, Listeners, Talkers, everyone on site. It was an amazing event. I had one ofthe best times ever, and I keep saying that. We had a string of events with major drama of one sort of another back around the turn of the millennia. We're done with that, we've grown, moved on, and moved forward. It's all because of you. We are not putting on a show, we're following an idea. Thank you, becasue it takes every single one of you to make it happen. I want this to continue. We celebrated 15 years of doing this, I should have 15 or 20 more in me at least. But, I also want to make sure this thing survives me. that is why we chronicle, that is why we ask for volunteers for staff, that is why we have tried to pursue permanent land. If you value this thing as I do, lets take some time out to reflect on what we can do to make it permanent. How can we pursue land, intentional community, replacements for the breakable bits (like Wade), and any other thing you can think of that will contributetothe betterment and longevity of this community.

Again, I THANK YOU ALL for PhoenixPhyre 2007. My batteries are recharged, I'm ready to face the world once again.

WAde Berlin, Proud Phamily Member.

Announcements: Work Weekend at Fred and Ardys (Was Elders in Need)
posted by Wade on Jan 16, 2007 - 01:57 PM

Gatherings As you may, or may not, know.....at AutumnMeet, I was crying on Wynette's shoulder about a room in my home I could not use because of water damage to walls and floor and a mold problem in there. I was just venting to my cuz, because my Fred works his butt off at his job and didn't have the time, energy, or skills to fix the room and I couldn't/wouldn't vent my frustration on him anyway. He does all he can already. Cousins come in handy that way. But Wynette went and told Wade. Then Wade comes along, with a gloomy face on, and says I hurt his feelings. I ask what the hell I did now......and he said he was hurt because I didn't let him know I needed help. Then I cried a bit. Then Wade arranged a work weekend at my home, Dragonwood.

To all of you who came, who de-constructed, and who re-constructed the room on our house..........a million thank you's are not sufficient to express my graditude./r Beginning with my Big Brother, Wade; the lovely Diane; the supremely competent Lisa; the fascinating Squeeky-bird (who helped keep me from pestering Wade!)........and....

John and Dawn and Jeannie and Todd (and his big truck) and Jimmy and Jenanne and Nikki and Alex and Panther and Jim (who is the electric and phone go-to man) and Marty and Mike and Jeff and Adrian (how's the poor thumb?) and not forgetting..../r Dee and James and Wilser and David (the other David, not Dee's husband) who hauled off burnables and burned them, and hauled stuff to the big truck and who chopped elephant ears and ginger out of the way and did many other things I did not see because I kept having to go sit down.....

Zephyr, Wynette and Steph who kept the Gator-ade, water, and sodas flowing and sandwiches and pizza handy to fill bellies.....and Jesse who kept me sane...and Ariel who trotted around doing whatever anyone needed a small girl-child to do....and Shelley who fetched in water in those handy little bottles.........

To all of you....my eternal thanks.

There was blood shed, and sweat.....there were feet going through that old rotten floor, there were muscles strained and tempers frayed.....but as far as I'm aware, there were no serious injuries....for which I am grateful. I felt enough guilt for having to ask for help, I'm just glad I don't have to feel guilty for anyone getting seriously hurt.

And I must say I never saw so many tools that make a job easier to do! Amazing! The only hand tools I've ever seen that worked by air compression are the wrenches a tire man uses to loosen the nuts on tires. I should have known Wade would have the most efficient tools around!

So, there's a new floor in there, and new walls, and electric outlets and phone jacks, and the ceiling is fixed, and the sheetrock is "taped and mudded".....and there is a ceiling light where there was none before, and a switch by the door, which I find very cool! It will take us a little time to finish off the room, but now it is manageable with the skills we have.

As my Circle-sister, Dee, said....that gang rocks!!!! And I only recall one time Wade had to tell me I needed to be someplace else! Ardy

Note: The Gallery has photos from this most worthwhile of community get togethers. Literally everyone who showed up did a fantastic job. The festivals are awesome, and the in between socials with small groups of us are really cool. BUT it's these kinds of things that take us from the "wannabes" to a true community.

Merchanting
The merchant fee for this gathering is $25.00 per 10 ft. x 10 ft. space. Multiple merchant spaces may be purchased; contact us directly if you need a larger area. We list Merchants on the Website; if you include the URL to your Website, we will link to you.

We will be repeating the "Craft Demos" for demonstrating the manufacture or creation of your wares. There has been a decline in the number of merchants who offer "Craft Demo's" of late. This is sad. You are depriving yourself and our community of a chance to demonstrate your product, and remember that Workshops are community service too!
The number of merchant sites are limited and are "First Come, First Served." There are only 25 sites available for rent to merchants and it is important to note that we generally close Merchant registrations 2 1/2 weeks into registration. Merchant sites usually fill very rapidly.
Be sure to read the merchant registration form and fill it out clearly and completely.

Merchants are required to have fire extinguishers displayed on the outside of their booths (bungie cords work great!). They cost around $7.00-$8.00 (at Walmart) and if yours gets used, we will refill or replace it at our option.

There will be an additional $20.00 per site for electricity. The good news, however, is that we anticipate NO difficulties with electrical service at Hidden River.

Songs and Chants Presented by Sally Klein

Magic and the Tarot Presented by Donald Michael Kraig
Most people think that the Tarot can only be used for doing divinations, fortune telling, or pathworking. In this workshop you’ll learn other ways of using the Tarot to bring real magick into your life, including using the Tarot cards as talismans, with candles, the amazing Dancing the Tarot technique, and as a synchronistic key to sex magick!

The Other Side of Tantra Presented by Donald Michael Kraig
Tantra is far more than the “yoga of sex” as many self-styled Tantric “experts” have claimed. It is a complete system of spirituality, as complete as the complexities of the Kabalah and as direct and straightforward as any of the numerous Neopagan systems popular today. In this class you will discover the “other side” of Tantra, the 98 per cent that does not deal with sexuality. Topics will include opening the senses, crazy wisdom, meditation, breath, magick and much more. Open to all people.

Sacred Dance Presented by Patricia Telesco
Seeing phamily and dancing the fire are the two main reasons I didn't want too miss the event! More to come.........

Gathering Etiquette
New to our Festival Environment? We’d like to invite you to attend Gathering Etiquette on the deck. All social interactions have certain customs that have evolved as “correct” behavior; Pagan gatherings are no different. Included are tips on how to interact with the friendly naked pagans, when throwing a cigarette into a fire is a bad idea, attending ritual, and more!

Dance of Life/Introduction to the Clan Mothers Presented by Gypsy (Thursday)
Early morning greet the day followed by an introduction to The Thirteen Original Clan Mothers by Jamie Sams: Sharing the truth of an ancient feminine wisdom tradition. A new method of honoring and incorporating native feminine wisdom into our daily lives. Each of the Clan Mothers reflects a particular teaching, relates to a cycle of the moon, and possesses special totems, talents and gifts that can help each of us cultivate our own personal gifts and talents.

Dance of Life/Animal Totems Presented by Gypsy (Friday)
A good way to greet the arrival of the new day.......Simple steps of acknowledging each of the four directions, drawing the power of the direction and giving it to the earth, and to the sky, centering it then sharing it with the East, with the West, and the South and the North.......Simple to follow movements that flow with each direction. Followed by an introduction to types of books and card decks available on the market, a discussion of different animals and what they have to say to us. We are all related.

All Wired Up Presented by Holly
How to wrap a stone nugget to wear as a pendant. How to make a Perfect Loop and a Basic Loop for earrings. Introduction to basic wire working tools. We will be working with copper wire for beginners, sterling wire will be available for additional cost.

Amber: Magical and Practical Applications Presented by Thorra Weylandsdottir
Thorra Weylandsdottir, an Asatruar who has worked with amber both artistically and spiritually, will discuss the significance of this beloved gem to various paths. Also covered in this workshop are healing practices and tests you can do to be sure the amber you purchased is real.

Energy Healing, based on the principles of Healing Touch Presented by Tyla Dragonfly
This workshop is a brief overview of energy techniques for healing, including ethics and basic principles of energy healing. Energy sensing exercises and two practical techniques will be taught. Tyla is an R.N. who has used energy and massage in pediatric nursing for over ten years. The techniques taught in this workshop are for use with adults and teenagers. Family and friends can share the use of these techniques for relaxation, and energy balancing. Bring a chair, and a pendulum (or something hung on a string or chain) and come prepared to have a fun and relaxing time of it!

Deconstructing the Witch Presented by Skip Clark
Ever wonder why witches ride brooms, wear blackhats, are green and have warts? Come to this workshop and find out. We’ll look at thease stereotypes and others. Dr. Skip Clatk is a medieval historian with numerous publications and paper presentations at scholarly and Pagan festivals and a regular at PhoenixPhamily events.

Body Goddess Presented by Dawn
Body Goddess is painting the body and pressing the painting into a cloth. It is a representation of the Goddess within. This art will make up the privacy curtain for the Crones' Circle. Crones only, see Ardy. Schedule before Crone Circle, afternoon, at the Deck.

Friendship Bracelets Presented by Dawn & Hannah
Making friendship bracelets.

History and Anatomy of the Drum Circle Presented by Freedom
A participatory workshop on the comparison and analysis of the drum circle, with special attention focused on the US with comparisons to other cultural examples around the world. We will compare and contrast forms and philosophies of such drum circles as “Traditional”, “Celebration”, “Pagan”, “Rainbow” and “inner city”.

Storytelling as History, Teaching and Healing Presented by Elspeth
Throughout human existence, information has been carried in the memories of the people. Part of understanding illness, for instance, is seeing it as part of myth and story. All of us, especially children, learn from stories. As we build community once again, we need to revive these skills. (Possible 2 part class)

Retroactive Rites of Passage Presented by Elspeth
Most of us missed our puberty rites. Many of us have passed other landmark occasions without fully honoring them- deaths, births, divorces, first job/house/car, gains and losses in life. Is it too late? Let’s talk about possibilities. Bring paper and pencil.

Silly Songs Presented by Elspeth
Forget your dignity. Come sing. No training needed. This is an excellent workshop for parents and children together. (But you don't have to bring a child to attend)

Be Responsible for Your Mouth Presented by Elspeth
Words are majik – powerful majik. And we speak them freely. What are your words doing as they pass from your mouth to someone’s ears? This class will consider some of the uses (and misuses) of the power of speech.

Note: In addition there are multiple youth and teen workshos - and each day there is a main ritual crafting workshop at 1:00 in the main ritual circle.

PhoenixPhyre 2006: Guest Speakers & Music
posted by Dianne on Feb 12, 2006 - 11:41 PM

Gatherings New Friends and Old Join the phamily in April this year

Donald Michael Kraig

Born in Chicago and raised in Los Angeles, Don’s early life was one conservative Judaism, which to him meant be good to others, attend religious services and everything else will turn our okay. Just before his Bar Mitzvah, however, one of the Rabbis at his temple demonstrated to Don some of the techniques of Judaism which were more mystical in nature. Thus began a search for the inner truths of life that has lasted over three decades.
Don has received a B.A. in philosophy from UCLA and has studied music there and at other colleges and universities He has performed musically at major venues in Southern California and, playing keyboards in rock bands, has opened for such diverse acts as Elton John and Great White. Recently he received a fellowship to USC where he received a certificate in multimedia, 3D graphics and animation and web design. He went on to work for major computer software companies and teach computers at USC.

Don is a Certified Tarot Master, an honor bestowed upon him after intense study by The Associated Readers Of Tarot, a not-for-profit, international, educational organization. Later he was awarded the rank of Certified Tarot Grandmaster. He is an ordained minister and holds a Certificate in Clinical Hypnotherapy. Don was the Editor-in-Chief of The Llewellyn New Times (now renamed New Worlds) for three years and FATE magazine, America’s longest-established magazine (over 40 years). He was the editor for Llewellyn’s on-line journal, found at www.llewellynjournal.com and is now an editor for New Worlds. He even had a radio show, “The FATE Magazine Radio Hour.”

Don has been a member of several metaphysical and magical organizations. After ten years of personal study and practice he began to teach classes in the Southern California area on such topics as Kabalah, Tantra, Tarot, magick, psychic development, psychic self-defence and Wicca. Over the next ten years he refined his teaching style. He took his most popular classes, expanded on them and refined them into what has become Modern Magick, the first step-by-step coursebook in ceremonial magick. Almost 600 pages in length, the book is arranged into 11 time-tested lessons. It explains such subjects as magick, Kabalah, Tarot, Tantra, talismans, reincarnation, sex magick, pathworking and much more in a clear, easy-to-understand and easy-to-use manner.

Author of Tarot & Magick, Modern Sex Magick, Magician’s Workbook, and Magical Diary, in addition to Modern Magick, Don now lives in Venice Beach, California, and teaches workshops both internationally and all over the U.S. He is studying for a doctorate in clinical hypnotherapy.

Patricia Telesco

Trish Telesco is the mother of three, wife, chief human to 5 pets, and a full-time professional author with more than 40 metaphysical books on the market.

While her actual Wiccan education was originally self-trained and self-initiated, she later received initiation into the Strega tradition of Italy, which gives form and fullness to the folk magic Trish practices. Her strongest beliefs lie in following personal vision, being tolerant of other traditions, making life an act of worship, and being creative so that magic grows with you.

Trish has appeared on several television segments, including one for Sightings on multi-cultural divination systems. Trish maintains a strong, visible presence in metaphysical journals including Circle Network News, and on the internet through popular web sites like The Witches Voice, her home page located at www.loresinger.com, and various appearances on internet chats and bbs boards.

Elspeth of Haven

Teacher, counselor, and Crone-on-the-Road, Elspeth is cofounder of the Haven Community, and proponent of the Haven Way, an eco-spiritual path of personal and planetary transformation. It is her strong belief that we are all healers, and that healing is our evolutionary mission.

Nybor of Haven

Nybor has been creating artistic masterpieces for the last 50 years and sold his first piece of art at the age of six. He has owned and operated art studios in Minneapolis and New York City and is renowned for his black and white science fiction art, including book and magazine covers and interiors.

Scarlett Ross
Scarlett Ross is a teacher, seeker, dreamer and Southern kitchen witch who cherishes a life of dreams and happiness with her husband, young son, cat, family, and spiritual community. Scarlett travels throughout the Southeast discussing her books (“Nostradamus for Dummies”, “Dreams of the Goddess” and “Spells: An Anthology”) and sharing her personal spiritual path, including workshops on personal divinity, dreams and spirituality, and women’s spirituality. Indigo Village, Inc.,a non-profit, non-religious New Age educational group, has become a focus for Scarlett as she concentrates on moving education into a new paradigm.

Doss*Millard*Kelso - DMK

Expect the Dreamtrybe songs you love!

Keyboardist Ginger Doss and bassist Lynda Millard are a double vocal harmonic powerhouse with a mix of influences. Their long-term partnership started with forming the all-female progrock band, Velvet Hammer, with Dana Davis, Katrina Lassberg, and later, Robin Beacham. Later, the duo formed Dreamtrybe with the addition of Lynda’s son, Tabber.

This newest evolution combines the talents of these former members of Dreamtrybe, Lynda and Ginger, combined with the rich voice of Bebeca Kelso to play some old favorites and some new, in an intimate acoustic setting with the help of some of our community’s best drummers.

Shining Wheel Pagan Chorus

Pagan music fans who like rock, pop, reggae, gospel, funk, blues, or any combination of these styles, will hear music that will satisfy them.

The eclectic Clearwater, Florida-based band, who have toured the southeast and whose first CD, Chants of Balance, has been highly acclaimed in PanGaia, NewWitch, and Circle Sanctuary magazines, will perform Friday, April 7th. The band’s songs are written by its members, whose main goal with their music is to share the energy of the God andGoddess.

Samples of their music can be heard at www.cdbaby.com/shiningwheel. They are currently in the studio working on their second CD, and several of the new songs will be performed, as well as favorites from Chants of Balance, at the PhoenixPhyre concert.

Nighthawk

Nighthawk and the Phoenix Drumtrybe, with maturity and experience, help facilitate drum circles with cohesive rhythms that last long into the night and keep the dancers moving and drummers at the fire. And the circle has been expanded, so ther’s plenty of space for drumming, dancing, and even, if we’re very fortunate, some fire spining!

A Review of AutumnMeet 2005
posted by Wade on Dec 06, 2005 - 12:00 PM

Gatherings A Great Festival and Wonderful Friends
Hello, all.

Well, last weekend I had my faith in neopaganism restored. That took some doing. After nearly 25 years on this path, I'm often disillusioned by the silliness, guillibillity or half-assed behavior of many folks rallied 'neath the Pagan banner. (Halloween/ Samhain this year was a sterling example of why.) For so many people, Paganism seems to be an excuse to wear black and vent their persecution complexes.

Not last weekend.

Attending AutumnMeet (http://www.phoenixfestivals.com/), I was struck by the sheer coolness and comfortable sense of community I encountered. My eight-hour road trip passed more quickly than I would have expected, and was enlivened by a vast selection of CD's(*) and a cute trio of playful kids in a convertible. Arriving Thursday night as publicist and roadie for my beloved friend Sooj (www.skinneywhitechick.com) and her equally-beloved partner K, I got to the site right behind them - quite a feat considering that we were coming from different parts of the country at the time! In the dark, we set up our tents and went off to meet folks and dance.

Now, dancing has been a risky proposition for me these last few weeks. Three weekends ago, I strained something in my right knee while dancing. Not wanting a limp (or worse) for the rest of my life, I've been wearing a knee brace ever since(**) and taking things easy. Even so, I was not going to attend a Pagan festival and not dance! The brace held, as did my knee, and all was good with the world. The drummers were far better than your average hippies-banging-in-a-circle, but for that evening things were fairly subdued... in comparison to the coming storm, anyway. Having spent all day on the road, Sooj, K and I crashed fairly early on. I slept more easily than I had expected to sleep, and passed a restful slumber in my tent alone.

Next morning, I got up in search of breakfast (which was provided by the wonderful Hearth Mistress Zephyr). Encountering my old friends from Emerald Rose, I hung with them for a while and started to meet new folks. The rising of Sooj and K and the arrival of Trish Telesco began a day of hanging out, poi-spinning practice and relaxed friendship. There was a hot tub and a very cold pool, both of which I enjoyed. For the most part, though, I spent a lot of time just watching people and was refreshed by what I saw.

In many Pagan gatherings I've seen, there's a lot of posturing, silly behavior, cheesy "craft names" and moral pretension matched only by a complete lack of substance. At AutumnMeet, though, the group was obviously a functioning community, filled with spirit and discipline. Everyone had responsibilities, and for the most part (as far as I could see) those duties were handled with a minimum of melodrama. True affection came through in most interactions I observed, tempered with respect. Not just a gathering, AutumnMeet was a community.

Most astonishing, however, were the kids. Many Pagan-raised children I've met have been utter shits, either indulged to the point of obscenity ("Oh, I don't believe in stifling little Nightshade's spirit!") or utterly neglected ("Little Thorr can take care of himself!"). The kids at AutumnMeet were neither. Strong, vital reflections of what neopagan ideals can accomplish, this handful of boys and girls was spirited yet respectful to themselves, one another, the adults and their surroundings. Sure, they were kids - yelling and running and tussling with one another - but they were very cool kids. In three days, I never saw the kind of emotional pyrotechnics or raw selfishness that one takes for granted (though we shouldn't!) in children in general and Pagan children in particular. These kids spun poin and fire, danced with true grace, played games with one another and conversed as near-equals with adults. To a one, they were smart, refined and aware. If this is what modern Pagan ideals can achieve, there may still be hope for our path.

In short, among both adults and kids I saw that much-vaunted phrase "family values" in practice. I doubt Ralph Reed would approve of the religion behind those values, but damn was it good to see that Christians don't have as exclusive a hold on that concept as many of them believe.

Note: Nice Review of AutumnMeet 2005 - thought I'd share.

AutumnMeet 2005: Rite of Passage Ritual for Autumn Meet 2005
posted by Wade on Oct 17, 2005 - 02:09 PM

Gatherings At the Phoenix Phyre Crones’ Dance, Lady Elspbeth proposed that we offer a
new ritual at Phoenix festivals. The concept was blessed by Wade and our
lead Crone, Ardy. The sad news is, Elpsbeth will not be at Autumn Meet
because she is healing from surgery. The good news is, Elspeth will be with
us in spirit and wants us go forward with this ritual.

What is this special ritual? Well, many of us were never offered the
opportunity to celebrate occasions in our life that were eventful and
deserving of acknowledgment. With the help and support of the Crones and
Sages, there will be a Rite of Passage ritual on Thursday night, 3rd of
November, to acknowledge those special occasions that you missed. This Rite
of Passage is to ritually recognize and celebrate life-altering experiences,
or accomplishments, from the distant, or recent, past and includes puberty,
birth, death, marriage, divorce, croning/saging, or even first job, house or
car. This is not intended to replace other Rites of Passage offered by the
Crones or Sages, but instead are focused on those missed and never
acknowledged.

AutumnMeet 2005: Special Information for Merchants for AutumnMeet 2005
posted by Dianne on Aug 13, 2005 - 02:49 PM

Gatherings If you are planning on vending at AutumnMeet, please register very soon! We are filling up rapidly!

Gatherings The days are filled with activities and phamily sharing.
Wednesday evening:

Opening Ritual and Drum Circle Blessing
8:00 PM
Ritual Circle
Presented by Staff
Opening Ritual sets the boundaries of our village, setting aside our entire festival site as sacred space.
The central point of Opening Ritual is lighting the sacred fire. This Ritual fire symbolizes our community, and is kept burning throughout the event. Please bring Percussion, Wind and String instruments. Chanters and dancers are also needed. This ritual will bring into our Drum Circle the Elements of Air, Fire, Water and Earth to join us in our music and dance. Come prepared to feel the blessings of sound, fire, movement, comrades and Earth. We will ask that they watch over this place of gathering, to enrich each of our experiences, to guard our trances, and give strength to our drummers and dancers. We will celebrate the gifts of the Elements by partaking of their manifest forms as we dance, drum, and chat the nights away. Fill us with the joy of Phamily, and blessings of Community
You may notice that we don’t take down the circle and thank the quarters at the end of opening ritual; this is because we are living in sacred space for the entire event.

Thursday evening:

Honoring Ritual 7:15 PM
Ritual Circle
Facilitated by Ardy
Did you, or someone you know and love, get a promotion, graduate from something, have a Rite of Passage, get initiated or elevated, join the military, have a baby, get handfasted, or experience any other momentous event in life that you wish to have Honored and Recognized? Have you had a loved friend or family member pass into Summerland? We have set aside this time for such Honoring and Recognition before Bardic Circle. Gatherings About AutumnMeet 2005 and Hidden River Resort

Registration for AutumnMeet 2005 is open and will again be held at Hidden River Resort, an 88 acre retreat located on the Florida-Georgia state line between Jacksonville and Lake City, just north of Macclenny, along the banks of the wild and scenic St. Mary’s River. You may wander the many trails, where you may find a secluded glen by a cypress pond; or stroll along the riverbank, sit under a huge old oak and feel the stress flowing away like the cool waters of the meandering St. Mary’s River. There are many camping areas, with electric and without, and RV hookups, with water and electric (a dump station is also available). Remember, though, this is THE WILD! All animals you encounter in the woods should be considered wild and dangerous. Do not attempt to approach, pet or feed them. You may also encounter poisonous plants or reptiles in your strolls. Nature has created pitfalls on the grounds - holes, fallen trees, etc. Be careful!! An alligator is in residence in the river - at last sighting it was about 5’.
Our Featured Guests include Ivo Dominguez, Jr., Nybor and Elspeth, and Kristin Madden. Our Featured Musicians are Emerald Rose and S. J. “Skinny White Chick” Tucker. Meals will be provided by our Staff Kitchen and we have four scholarships available for Kitchen Help. Please contact us at 904-674-0607 or info@phoenixfestivals.com if you’re interested in being a kitchen slave.

posted by Dianne on Aug 11, 2005 - 09:12 PM

Gatherings Back by popular demand - Emerald Rose and S.J. "Skinny White Chick" Tucker!

Emerald Rose

Emerald Rose as a musical group came together sometime in 1996, with our first “official” performance on St. Patrick’s Day 1997. We were friends first, working together on projects that varied from landscaping and stonemasonry to the study of ancient religions. At night, we’d play Magic:The Gathering, Dungeons & Dragons, or other such creative pastimes, and gradually we found a synergy in our musical interests. Though our styles and backgrounds were diverse, we all shared a love for our ancestors’ Celtic traditions, and a desire to see this musical heritage grow, thrive and evolve.

Emerald Rose is many things, a blend of musical style that’s evolving in ways even we can’t always anticipate. From Celtic tradition, to modern ballad, to folk, pop, rock & roll and even zany chicken songs...who know’s what’s coming next? We all just hope it continues to be as entertaining to you as it is to us!

S.J. Tucker

S. J. “Skinny White Chick” Tucker is a successfully selling artist with CD Baby and PaganMusic.com, recognized for her musical endeavors by TheBestFemaleMusicians.com, GoGirlsMusic.com, WebCDs.com, and FemMuse.com. She sings from the heart and to the soul. Her lyrics are powerful and her music, ethereal. Cultivating a folk sound, Tucker has a voice in a million -- powerful, hypnotic, untamed and yet utterly controlled. She sings from the gut, but hers is a trained instrument. S. J. has a new album, “Tangles” which had its official release on July 5th. It’s pretty, it’s slightly slicker than ‘Haphazard’, and a Memphis Pagan artist did the cover art. Sound clips are up: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/sjtucker2

PhoenixPhyre 2004 was our first festival held on the new property, and it met our needs very well. We can look forward to a wonderful festival on an incredible property.

Rituals: Main Ritual from PP2005
posted by Precawan on Apr 19, 2005 - 04:47 PM

Gatherings The Main Ritual will rid each person (who makes an effort to participate freely) of things they no longer wish to have in their lives such as things that cause them pain or disharmony, bad habits, lack of confidence, problems, etc., and replace the space those things took in the spirit and in the body and daily lives with positivity, love, prosperity, strength, power and being able to tap the source of universal energy that is available to all of us. The goal is for them to FEEL their power of goodness and beauty, ending things negative or no longer of use to them and offering them rebirth of what they want in their lives.

Giving and receiving is an essential part of the ritual so those putting it on should give wonderful gifts to all the participants prior to the ritual. All participants should be encouraged to use their own words and should not be given scripts to memorize. No one who asks to be in the ritual should be left out. That is an important part of the ritual. It is another form of giving and allowing.

Prior to the procession, paint will be made available in the pavilion (or for vendors who cannot leave their booths, paint will be taken to them for their convenience). Everyone will be asked to decorate themselves with images of strength and power and boldness: things that would be meant to frighten “the enemy” which is any thing that could work against them in any way (such as poverty, pain, illness, hurt, etc.).

Gatherings To new frinds and to old friends and to the Flower Fairies (Kaylin)I want to say thank you. I came to Festival late, heartsore and weary and you made me laugh again. I am humbled by the love and peace that you gave me and by the joy that you all reminded me of.

I thank you all with all my heart. I have come home again.

Gatherings The workshops are all in and are very exciting!

Can we talk about the Change of Life? Presented by Ardeith of Dragonwood
Can we mention "menopause" in mixed company?
I think we should because some 38 million women will be making that Change in the next few years.
Let's talk about what you can expect during this time, and how you can cope with it.
Why should men be interested in this? Because you either live with women, work with women, or are the sons and brothers of women; and because those women are going to go through changes that will have an impact on your
